Single Tennis Holiday: How to play tennis for beginners in Mallorca is for you if …

  • You’ve uttered the words, “I’ve always wanted to learn the game but am too nervous to take lessons.”

  • You’ve tried tennis before, but the lessons were too technical - you gave up.

  • You’re starting from nothing and need to pick up the basics.

  • You’ve got poor technique from high school & need simple fixes on the 5 core strokes.

  • You’re looking for calm, patient, straight to the point teaching.

  • You think it’s too late to learn because you’re over 40 and feel you’re too old.

  • You’re starting from zero and looking for a social fun new activity.

  • You want to fix bad habits.

  • You need verbal cues / tips specific to you on what you’re doing wrong.

  • You need solid basics to build on back at home.

  • You want to learn to play with friends. But don’t want to waste their time because you can’t play.

  • You’ve tried lessons in the past but never made much progress.

Tennis Travel: Your adventure begins on court

Let the fun begin!

A good coach teaching the right mechanics and fundamentals helps a lot. You can literally save years in progress and avoid developing bad habits by seeing, hearing & having time to try, make mistakes, then correct, on repeat. One thing important at the beginner stage of tennis is to have the coach on the same side of the court explaining and showing you each core stroke you learn 1 by 1.

Beginner’s struggle with reversing the instruction when the coach shows you something far away from the other side. Think about it. The coach and you are flipped around. So if they’re facing you and showing you the forehand stroke but it’s their right but it’s a flipped image for the player who hasn’t done this before. Then so often, the image doesn’t translate well. Coaches should be on the same side of the court as the player. It’s sooo much easier for a beginner to mirror a stroke from behind the instructor following along. In the beginning, the image a player sees & reflects makes more sense when the coach & student are on the same side of the court.

Single Tennis Holiday: The 5 foundational tennis strokes for beginners

Tennis Player Showing How To Do Eastern Grip Ready Position

Calm, simple teaching techniques make all the difference for new players wanting to succeed. As a beginner adult starting out, the only thing you need to walk away with besides your 5 core strokes is … DO YOU like tennis?🎾

This is where it all begins. If the game makes you feel good, terrific. If it excites and gives you a new activity you’d like to play after work to burn off steam and have something of your own this is a great thing. But you shouldn’t be feeling any expectations other than to really figure out if you’re in or out. Tennis can be a commitment of your time. The more you like it. The more you’ll carve time to play and practice.

Pro tip:💡
If you get out & play 3x per week, you’re learning the 5 core strokes, including the grips (only 2), contact point and fluid swing you’re going to improve FAST.

The 5 core strokes to get you rallying (playing tennis quickly)

  • Forehand (eastern grip, wrist position, how to track the ball, contact point)

  • 2 Handed Backhand: (easier than a 1 handed backhand for newbies, continental grip, contact point)

  • Volleys / FH & BH (where to stand, wrist position, continental grip, contact position, amount of swing)

  • Serve (continental grip, toss position, motion, contact point, how to finish the stroke)

  • Overhead smash (continental grip, motion, contact point, options for newbies)

The idea is to get you confident to take your shot when the moment arrives. Giving you tools to know how to track a ball and when to strike. Timing & where to contact the ball, the position of your wrist and knowing when to use the 2 different grips you’ll learn is really half the battle and the adventure for beginner tennis players.

Using the clay courts, a slower ball or both is ideal. In the beginning stages, the slower the better. You need time to process the look, verbal cues and feel of the the stroke. Receiving a lot of balls will help get you there faster.

Group lessons for beginner lessons will be no more than 1 coach to 4 players (1:4 court ratio). And I love 1:3 because you get more balls and we have more success ✨

Go home knowing where you are on court & how to keep score. And don’t under estimate the court geometry. This is soooo helpful to when you apply basic tennis strategies when you start rallying a ball.
