High school tennis players experience their best Easter holiday tennis camp at the Rafa Nadal Academy falling in love with tennis in weeks April 10 - 17 & April 17 - 24, 2023.
Early in February 2021, my visit to the Rafa Nadal Academy is loaded with international juniors 12 & under competing at the RNA academy which hosts many ITF junior tennis tournaments on site. It struck me that high school tennis teams would do nothing but gain energy, knowlege & inspiration attending a training week abroad.
Watching these young, intense juniors play their hearts out reminded me how motivated juniors are around high competition. And this place has kids happy, hyped & overtly focused looking to increase results.
A lot of high school players sidelined by Covid too long lost their appetite for the game. High school coaches felt desperate & behind come playing season. With players who hadn’t hit a ball or served for way too long. I wish I could have every struggling high school tennis player visit the RNA academy to rejuvenate their energy & instinct for the game. The coaches, international players, facilities & photo ops alone are the best in Spanish tennis. With spainish tennis coaching being the most sought out in the world.
Rafa Sightings? You bet
It got me thinking how the Rafa Nadal Academy is a total sensory experience for anyone visiting, let alone a junior in love with tennis.
The expansive grounds have more than 36 courts both clay & hard have become the staple of Rafa’s training ground in Manacor. The Rafa Nadal store is THE fun spot where your player can find anything their heart desires or needs during their visit to the academy. Top tennis & padel brands, Rafa logo’d product, rackets, strings, shoes and of course, Babalot.
The academy is obviously Rafa’s favorite place to train. Between tournaments you’ll find him here sparring with top academy players while he keeps a watchful eye over the annual players having so much success here.
As a Tennis Director for adult tennis holidays I look out for real training spots for junior tennis players who specific training goals. The problem happens when a players character may not match an academy’s training philosophy. There’s no academy who will turn a player down. So it’s important to make sure a family’s goal and players personality line up accordingly for a successful experience. Here’s where the Rafa Nadal Academy excels …
professional tennis training & annual planning by RNA academy’s lead coaches
college training & scholarships in the USA
technical development towards learning how to compete at a high level
Modern accommodations, medical & physio’s on site 1:4 court ratios - with the annual program often being smaller with kids traveling for tournaments
Swimming pools
Padel courts + padel courses
multi sport facility
Junior Tennis Training, Mallorca Spain
Until now, I’d sidelined commercial tennis academies for their size, ridiculously large court ratios & over the top marketing. Anytime you see an academy advertising specials on every social channel run the opposite way. it’s not a good sign.
In big optics or celebrity sponsored academies usually the name on the windscreen is typically nowhere in sight. Likely not even in the same country as the academy. But after running adult tennis camps here at the Rafa Nadal Academy for awhile, witnessing the coaching line-up, organization and drills 1st hand, I knew the acadmey was the real deal. And it really surprised me how serious and engaged even the junior coaches were.
The Rafa Nadal Academy is a safe space for high school tennis & junior tennis players. Kids generally have zero fear of getting sick or meeting an injury. Yet academy players are absolutely secure on the academy grounds with Nadal’s sport medical center should your player require medical assistance or encounter an injury.
The Rafa Nadal Academy Coaches
This should be a high school tennis coach's dream and a solid training experience for the coach. Team bonding, 1st hand swipes off the coaching methods, drills and player patterns. Witness 1st hand the team’s nerves, excitement & efforts as they rally to keep up with international players. Most high school coaches aren’t certified teaching professionals or even players. So this would be a 5 star coaching experience as well.
A few coaching names you may recognize at the Nadal academy are; Toni Nadal, Carlos Moya, Marcos Gorriz and Joel Figueras. All incredible coaches I've followed on my own coaching path for well over a decade. They’re on-site, dedicated and doing great things with the players. With names like that it’s pretty impressive & rare to see.
The tennis experience is different, intense and efficient. Seeing these coaches huddled around the lunch table hanging on Uncle Toni´s direction, working player’s travel schedules or hand picking tournaments for annual players was comforting to see.
Are You a Fan of Rafa Nadal?
Here's where life gets interesting for high school tennis players.
High school tennis is often more recreational tennis than high competition. You can often find newer players to the game able to score a position on a team. But often with a few tournament very serious tennis players. This academy can suit any level, not only high performance. So for team bonding and tennis that offers technique, fitness and drills around strategy this is the best place for all levels. They have the players, sufficient courts and a staff that can accommodate beginner - intermediate and high performace, Rafa Nadal Academy has it.
Looking to play college tennis? Visit with the intention to stay at least 3 weeks to 3 mths. Take advantage of the facility, fitness, mental and tournaments both at the academy and around spain.
If you’re a Rafa Nadal lover this academy is the next best place to Disneyland for tennis players!
High school tennis players learn court positioning, consistency, attacking - defending. Test your game against international players from all-over the world. While off-court visiting the Rafa Nadal museum and Xperience take you inside the virtual tennis life of Rafa Nadal.
Non-tenistas come here for the multi-sport facility where they take advantage of the facility for cycling, swimming, futbol and padel events.
State of the Art Facilities: No exaggeration there
I abhor marketing catch phrases.
I can't avoid it here.
Everything is clean, professional and well cared for including your boarding quarters. Think of your players' accommodation as a 4 star hotel in size & amenities.
The food is solid for a teaching academy, hots, colds, fresh, heart healthy and nutritious for sporting people. Snacks are readily available to players at all times of the day. Remember, tennis players eat, burn and replenish throughout the day.
The multi-sport complex is perfect for annual players who train, board and school here (€56,000 / yr.) or for high school tennis players who haven't decided how far they plan to take their game.
When Rafa built his academy he did it with a balanced life in mind. Not solely playing tennis.
The facilities offer:
Fitness center
4 star quality boarding rooms
Wellness spa
Indoor pool & outdoor pool
Pádel courts
Futbol court
36 tennis courts (hard & clay courts)
Not everyone wants to play pro tennis.
Full-time players boarding here year round are looking to win a Grand Slam one day. Or a D1 USA university scholarship as plan B.
Not every high school tennis player has decided to play in college. So developing your player's passion for the game is as important as developing their serve. You can do that here.
I've coached high school tennis players (girls). I remember how the interest wanes easily after a couple tough matches & outside interests. All part of life. Certainly part of a player's life in tennis. Here’s a place where the camaraderie of training together reignites the passion in any tennis player.
Easter Tennis Holiday … Family Travel
So while this is ideally a place for a high school tennis coach to soar training his team. It's also great for families to travel over Easter holiday.
Mallorca temps are mild, it's sunny and tourism is low. All good things for Mallorca. Just before things explode, the island heats up, and everyone arrives for Summer holidays.
Mallorca, Spain is a natural, gorgeous & charming tennis holiday for families. Renting a car is easy and inexpensive when done in advance. Renting automatic cars takes more planning and are more expensive. But if mom or dad drives a manual car you can explore the island after training low cost.
A Pool of Energized Competitve Tennis Players
As a tennis coach my focus has always been on player levels.
Smart & engaging coaches (not ball feeders) and the pool of players to train and advance against.
Intermediate competition players get a birds eye view around high competition players of what life looks & feels like at the highest levels. Planting a seed in a player's mind what it will take to reach the place they dream of in their mind’s eye. That's a good thing. It's inspiring.
Even a trip to the Rafa Nadal Academy store is enough to send gear & apparel junkies into overdrive.
An Easter tennis holiday for high school tennis players, coaches & family tennis trips is a full-on tennis experience.
Academy coaches & staff treat you, well. You won't be ignored, screamed at or left behind. Coaches teach in a manner that allows the information to enter & process in the body. Lessons are in Spanish and English.
As the game advances, as court surfaces, strings & materials speed the game up, it’s important to learn from coaches who study or have played the game at high levels. Here you’ll add variety in your shot selections as well. You've seen Rafa play, right? Having variety and an all-court game is a staple in spain. By the way, tennis is spelled TENIS in spain.
